Thomas J. “Tom” Muldoon

1952–2026
Former President of American Exchanger Services, Inc. and a dedicated Life Member and Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

Thomas J. “Tom” Muldoon, lifelong ASME member and ASME Fellow, engineer, entrepreneur, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly on May 15, 2026, in Selangor, Malaysia, while overseeing the commissioning of equipment for a power generation project. He was 73.

For nearly five decades, Tom dedicated his career to the design, fabrication, and installation of pressure vessels and heat exchangers built to ASME Code standards. As founder of American Exchanger Services, he helped deliver reliable power infrastructure to communities across both the developing and developed world, improving the lives of millions of people who will never know his name. He approached engineering with equal parts rigor, creativity, and optimism, believing that no problem was unsolvable and that meaningful progress came from steady effort, collaboration, and ingenuity.

In Tom’s memory, contributions may be made to the ASME Foundation Thomas J. Muldoon Memorial Fund, which supports engineering education, scholarships, and opportunities for future engineers.

It is a fitting tribute to a man who spent a lifetime building, innovating, and solving complex problems, and who believed deeply in leaving the world better than he found it.

Tom was deeply committed to the engineering profession and to the mission of ASME. His recognition as an ASME Fellow reflected not only his technical expertise and contributions to industry, but also his lifelong dedication to advancing the profession and supporting those who would follow in his footsteps. Throughout his career, he was driven by the conviction that engineering exists to improve lives and expand what is possible for future generations.

A recognized expert in power generation, Tom authored numerous technical papers and was a sought-after speaker at industry conferences, where he generously shared his knowledge and practical insight.

Among his many accomplishments, Tom took particular pride in contributing to advanced energy technologies and helping solve complex challenges that others considered impossible. He spent his career delivering the energy the world needed today while helping build the foundation for the energy systems of tomorrow.

Yet for all of his professional achievements, Tom’s greatest pride was his family. He and his beloved wife, Robin A. Muldoon, shared nearly 50 years of marriage and raised four children together. He was a devoted father to Tom (Katie) Muldoon, Erin (Jason) Betts, Meryl Muldoon, and Kellen (Sophia) Muldoon, and a loving Pop-Pop to nine grandchildren. No matter how demanding the project or how distant the job site, he always made time for the people he loved. When one of his children once observed that he would likely have far more money had he not devoted so much of his life to raising a family, Tom replied, “Maybe, but I would not be a wealthy man.” In many ways, that single sentence captured how he measured success.

Tom believed deeply in the power of engineering, curiosity, and hard work to create a better world. Through the projects he completed, the people he mentored, and the family he raised, his influence extends far beyond his own career. His legacy will continue not only in the infrastructure he helped build, but also in the future engineers who enter the profession inspired by the same spirit of building, problem-solving, and service that defined his life.
